The European Parliament that looks like an ancient Greek temple

The Austrian Parliament will make you wonder for a few seconds whether you are in Athens or in the Austrian capital.

The architect of the building is Baron Theophilos Hansen, who studied architecture in Athens and designed the National Observatory of Athens, the Academy and the National Library.

The style is neo-Greek and the main building was built between 1874 and 1883 to house the legislature of the Austrian part of Austria-Hungary.

In front of the Parliament stands the imposing fountain statue of the goddess Athena, created between 1893 and 1902 by 3 architects who followed Hansen's plans.

The four figures below the goddess Athena are allegorical representations of the four main rivers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
