Discover Drakolimni: The Greek Game of Thrones scenery enchants everyone | According to local folktales the lakes used to be inhabited by dragons who fought each other by throwing pines and rocks

Fairytale atmosphere, rich traditions, legends with dragons and stunning panoramic views, are some of the elements that compose the rare beauty of the Greek so called “dragon lakes”, the mountain jewels of Epirus region that you have to discover even once in your life. Located at Papigko, Zagorochoria and at an altitude of 2.050 m., the mythical “dragon lake” or "Drakolimni" of Tymfi lies among Aoos and Voidomatis river and promises to offer you images of rare beauty.

According to the legend, it owes its name to a dragon, a huge creature which is believed to have found its natural habitat within this lake- and which is in constant conflict with another dragon...that of mountain Smolikas -the second highest mountain on Greek land after Mount Olympus-. The two dragons are said to throw stones to one another and this is the reason, according to the legend, that the shores of Tymfi Lake are black with white stones and respectively, the shores of Smolikas lake are white with black stones.

There you will find running fresh waters, while at the same time you can see wild goats, large predatory birds and small mammals that constitute the fauna of the region. The beauty of the landscape is indescribable, offering panoramic views to the surrounding peaks of the mountains.
