Greek Roma(Gypsy) Loot Burned Houses in Fire-Affected Areas of Attica – 17 Detained and One Arrested by Greek Police

August 16, 2024

The authorities have detained and arrested several Roma individuals involved in looting in the fire-affected areas of Attica. The police have instructed security and order patrols (Immediate Action, DIAS Teams, OPKE) to carry out continuous and strict checks on individuals who have no legitimate reason to be in the areas affected by the fires in northeastern Attica. Those deemed suspicious will be prohibited from entering the affected areas and will be immediately detained.

So far, 17 Roma individuals have been detained in the affected areas, and one was arrested yesterday in Penteli after being caught in the act by police forces, removing items from a destroyed house.

The police have warned that the checks will continue, their presence will remain constant, and there will be zero tolerance for offenders.
