The Forgotten Sunken City of Epidaurus (Incredible Video)

May 3, 2025

With its centuries-old history and rich cultural heritage, Greece has endless treasures waiting to be discovered by travelers who choose to explore the land of Zeus. Yet, some of the country’s most remarkable secrets remain hidden—sometimes not beneath the ground, but beneath the sea.

While many have heard of the sunken ancient city near Pavlopetri in Laconia, far fewer know of another submerged "Atlantis" just a few kilometers from Athens—the ancient underwater city of Epidaurus.

Most visitors head to Epidaurus to experience the world-renowned Ancient Theatre, famous for its extraordinary acoustics, located less than two hours from Athens. But few are aware of the nearby submerged ruins that tell a different, equally fascinating story.

Just a short distance from the shore, barely two meters beneath the surface, lie the remains of this lost city: ancient walls, building foundations, giant amphorae, and paved pathways resting quietly beneath the waves. From above, the outlines of cobbled streets—once bustling with life—can still be seen, giving modern visitors a glimpse into the daily life of a long-forgotten civilization.

Swimming through the clear waters above the site offers a surreal experience. It feels less like snorkeling and more like stepping into the shoes of an underwater archaeologist, drifting over centuries-old ruins frozen in time.

Experts believe this area likely served as a trading post in antiquity, which would explain the scale and layout of the submerged infrastructure.

A breathtaking drone video captured by the YouTube channel Haanity showcases the site in stunning detail, offering a bird’s-eye view of what many now call the "Atlantis of Argolis"—a poetic nickname for this remarkable sunken city of Epidaurus.
