The Wavy Resort in Epidaurus That Blends into the Earth Like a Chameleon — and Is Praised by the International Press

July 19, 2025

On a lush hillside in Epidaurus, a bold architectural dream is coming to life: Gods and Dreams Resort from Epidaurian Healing Dreams, designed by 314 Architecture Studio and led by architect Pavlos Chatziangelidis. Although still under construction since 2022, the project has already captured the attention of both Greek and international media — even winning the prestigious A+Awards in 2022.

From above, the resort resembles the natural folds of the earth — ancient terraces or “wrinkles in the land.” It doesn’t look like a hotel, but rather a hidden landscape that’s slowly being revealed.

The layout of the complex echoes that of an amphitheater — a direct nod to the iconic ancient theater of Epidaurus. This is no coincidence: in ancient Greece, theater and healing were intimately linked. Here, art, nature, and silence come together to create a deeply immersive, almost ritualistic experience.

A Resort Embedded in the Earth

The residences are partially buried into the landscape, leveraging geothermal benefits from the earth, where temperatures stay a consistent 18–22 °C year-round. These earth-sheltered homes don’t just coexist with the land — they appear to grow out of it.

Each row of residences features curved, green rooftops — undulating gardens that connect the living spaces while offering insulation and serenity. Pathways lined with mirrors and water features create a surreal sense of vastness and calm.

Inspired by Sacred History

The design philosophy draws inspiration from:

  • The Sanctuary of Asclepius and Epidaurus’ ancient healing heritage.

  • The amphitheatrical form of the ancient theater, reimagined as terraced residences.

  • The human relationship with earth through architectural “steps” that mirror ancient terrace farming.

The result is an architectural “dance” between earth and sea horizon — with organic skylights dotting the rooftops, allowing natural light to move fluidly within the interiors.

A Conversation Between Land and Architecture

In an interview with iefimerida.gr, architect Pavlos Chatziangelidis shared:

“In the case of Gods and Dreams Resort, our design becomes part of the landscape — an active participant. The terraces represent humanity’s instinctive response to terrain, a method of shaping the earth that dates back to ancient times.

These earth-sheltered buildings utilize the stable underground temperatures (18–22°C), which remain constant regardless of external weather. This isn’t a passing trend — it’s a reevaluation of what it means to design with the land.

We’re exploring qualities such as rough or smooth surfaces, hidden underground spaces, rocky formations, slopes, and what they offer: isolation, concealment, revelation. These are not only architectural decisions, but also experiential ones — shaping how visitors interact with the landscape.”

What the Resort Will Offer

The final complex will include:

  • 40 independent residences with 2–3 bedrooms, ideal for families or groups.

  • A central hub featuring a restaurant, gym, and luxury spa with indoor and outdoor pools.

  • A cable car system and landscaped walking paths providing access from the upper hillside.

“A Poem of Earth and Light”

Already praised by international publications, Gods and Dreams Resort has been described as “a poem made of soil and light” — a project that quietly redefines what a luxury escape can be, by honoring the earth it rises from.
