Swiss Hiker Rescued After Injury in Vikos Gorge

April 20, 2026

A dramatic rescue unfolded in the depths of Vikos Gorge, one of Europe’s most breathtaking yet dangerous natural landscapes.

A Swiss hiker was successfully rescued after suffering an injury while trekking through the gorge, triggering a major emergency response. Rescue teams faced extremely difficult conditions, navigating steep cliffs, rocky terrain, and remote paths to reach the injured tourist. The operation required careful coordination, highlighting once again how unforgiving the area can be even for experienced visitors.

The gorge, located in northwestern Greece, is renowned for its stunning beauty but also its risks. With narrow trails, loose rocks, and sheer drops, even a minor misstep can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation. Past incidents have shown how quickly hikes in the area can escalate into full-scale rescue missions, often requiring helicopters and specialized units.

Despite the danger, the Swiss hiker was ultimately brought to safety, thanks to the rapid response and expertise of Greek rescue services. The incident serves as another reminder that while Greece’s wild landscapes attract thousands of adventurers every year, they demand respect, preparation, and caution.
