Pan was the rustic god of nature, wild mountains, shepherds, herds, and rustic music. Portrayed with the horns, legs, and tail of a goat (satyr/faun morphology), he inhabited the rugged highlands of Arcadia, far removed from the civilized marble palaces of Mount Olympus.

Key Mythology & Cultural Impacts

• The Pan Flute (Syrinx): When the nymph Syrinx fled Pan's lustful advances, she transformed into water reeds. Grieving, Pan cut the reeds into unequal lengths and bound them together with wax, creating the musical instrument known as the pan flute.

• The Origin of "Panic": Pan possessed a terrifying voice. When disturbed from his afternoon naps or during wilderness battles, he could let out a blood-curdling shout that instilled sudden, irrational terror in men and armies—the origin of the word panic. During the Battle of Marathon (490 BCE), the Athenians credited Pan with spreading panic among the Persian forces.
