The Controversial Love Story of Ali Pasha and Vasiliki

March 22, 2025

Ali Pasha of Ioannina, a powerful Ottoman ruler, met Vasiliki Kontaxi when she was around 12 to 14 years old. At the time, Ali Pasha was about 60 years old. Their relationship began under tragic circumstances—Vasiliki was engaged to another man, who was executed by Ali Pasha’s men.

Vasiliki’s Influence on Ali Pasha

Despite their significant age difference, Vasiliki became one of Ali Pasha’s most cherished companions. She was said to have earned his trust and played a notable role in his life, particularly during the final years of his rule.

The Fall of Ali Pasha

Ali Pasha’s reign ended in 1822 when Sultan Mahmud II ordered his execution. After years of operating independently from the Ottoman Empire, Ali Pasha had become a threat to the Sultan’s authority. He retreated to the island in Lake Ioannina, where he was promised amnesty. However, as soon as he stepped out of his fortress, he was ambushed, shot, and beheaded. His severed head was sent to Constantinople as proof of his death.

Vasiliki’s Fate After Ali Pasha’s Death

Following Ali Pasha’s execution, Vasiliki was captured by the Ottomans. However, her life was spared, and she was taken to Constantinople. Eventually, she was allowed to return to Ioannina, where she lived in seclusion on the same island where she had once shared a home with Ali Pasha.

She passed away in 1834 at the age of approximately 45 to 50, spending her final years in solitude.
