Which Greek City Made It to the Top 12 Spring Destinations in the World?

March 25, 2025

Thessaloniki has been ranked among the world’s top travel destinations for May, according to the renowned travel guide Lonely Planet. Featured on a list of 12 must-visit cities and regions across the globe, this Greek gem stands out as an ideal spring getaway.

According to the article, Thessaloniki is perfect for a city break in the spring, offering a vibrant blend of history, culture, and an inviting atmosphere. Though the city was founded in 315 BC, it remains youthful and full of energy, with locals and students filling the squares and cafés. Rooftop bars and terraces become particularly popular as the temperatures rise.

With an average temperature of 24°C (75°F) in May, Thessaloniki also provides easy access to beautiful beaches. Epanomi, just 25 kilometers from the city, and the breathtaking coastline of Halkidiki, a two-to-three-hour bus ride away, offer stunning turquoise waters and a refreshing escape from the urban buzz.

The city is famous for its Roman ruins, historic churches, and charming traditional neighborhoods. Landmarks such as the White Tower and the lively district of Ladadika are hotspots for both leisurely strolls and a vibrant nightlife experience.

Thessaloniki shares its place on Lonely Planet’s May travel list with other stunning locations, including Barbados for surfing, the Great Smoky Mountains in the U.S., and Newfoundland in Canada.

Undoubtedly, Thessaloniki is a top choice for a spring escape, offering an unforgettable mix of history, culture, and natural beauty.
