Greece Will Send 40 Fighter Jets to Fight Russia? The Truth Behind the Mirage Deal

April 23, 2026

A wave of headlines has sparked speculation that Greece is preparing to send more than 40 fighter jets to Ukraine in its war against Russia. The reality, however, is far more complex—and far from finalized.

At the center of the discussion is Greece’s fleet of Dassault Mirage 2000 aircraft. These jets, some active and others in storage, have become the focus of a proposal reportedly pushed by Emmanuel Macron and the French government. The idea is simple on paper: Greece would transfer a significant number of its Mirage aircraft to Ukraine, strengthening Kyiv’s air capabilities at a critical moment in the war.

In exchange, France would offer Athens incentives—primarily involving the acquisition of more advanced Dassault Rafale fighter jets. Such a move would align Greece more closely with modern Western air power while allowing France to play a leading role in supporting Ukraine militarily.

But despite the dramatic narrative, Greece has not agreed to any such transfer.

Athens faces a difficult strategic calculation. The Mirage fleet, although aging, still plays a role in the country’s air defense, particularly in a region marked by ongoing tensions in the Aegean. Removing dozens of aircraft without an immediate and guaranteed replacement would risk creating a gap in operational readiness—something Greek defense planners are unwilling to accept lightly.

There is also the question of cost and compensation. Greek officials are reportedly not interested in simply donating valuable military assets. Any deal would likely require significant financial or military return, ensuring that Greece’s own security posture is not weakened in the process.

At the same time, the pressure from France reflects a broader European effort to bolster Ukraine’s air force. Mirage aircraft are already being introduced into Ukrainian service, and additional jets could expand their operational capabilities. For Paris, facilitating such a transfer would reinforce its influence within European defense policy while supporting Ukraine in a tangible way.

The issue is expected to be discussed at the highest level during upcoming diplomatic engagements between Greece and France, where defense cooperation and regional security will dominate the agenda.

For now, the notion that “Greece will send 40 aircraft to fight Russia” remains speculative. What is actually unfolding is a high-stakes negotiation—one that balances alliance commitments, national defense priorities, and the shifting realities of war in Europe.
