The Curse of the Myrmidons: The Ant-Men Warriors

July 22, 2026

Origins on Aegina

The Myrmidons were an elite, fear-inspiring tribe of warriors from Thessaly, famously led by Achilles during the Trojan War. According to myth, their origin was born from tragedy on the island of Aegina:

  1. Hera's Plague: Enraged that Zeus named the island after his mistress Aegina, Hera sent a devastating plague of serpents and disease that wiped out the island's human population.

  2. King Aeacus' Prayer: King Aeacus (father of Peleus and grandfather of Achilles), left alone on a desolate island, prayed to Zeus for help while sitting beneath a sacred oak tree covered with ants.

  3. Transformation: Aeacus asked Zeus to give him as many citizens as there were ants on the tree. Overnight, Zeus transformed the colony of ants into human beings—naming them Myrmidones (from the Greek word for ant, myrmex).

Characteristics in Combat

Reflecting their insect heritage, the Myrmidons fought with absolute collective discipline, fierce loyalty to their leader, and relentless ferocity. They moved in compact, unbreakable formations akin to swarming ants, making them the most feared unit in the Achaean coalition at Troy.
