The ancient carriage connecting Thrace with Pompeii.

A photograph showing a horse-drawn carriage and horse skeletons at the end of the first century AD. It was discovered in 2002 on a tombstone in Thrace in northeastern Greece.

The carriage bears striking similarities to those found near Pompeii, the Italian city destroyed by a volcano in 79 AD. The well-preserved and richly decorated carriage is unique in Italy but not in Greece, where five similar have been excavated in Mikri Doxipara, Thrace.
