Greece Under Siege: Deadly Storm Slams Crete, Floods Paralyze Cities!

April 1, 2025

A relentless wave of severe weather continues to pound Greece, with Crete now taking the full force of the storm after devastating floods swept through the Cyclades. The chaos began Monday afternoon, April 31, and has only intensified.

Authorities have issued an emergency alert via the 112 public warning system, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

“Severe weather conditions, including powerful local storms, are expected in Crete until the morning of April 2, 2025. Remain cautious and follow official instructions,” the warning advised.

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), heavy rain and violent thunderstorms will hit western and southern Crete from late Tuesday night, April 1, into Wednesday morning, April 2.

Local reports from Cretapost describe dramatic scenes in Chania, where intense rainfall and lightning struck at 8 a.m., submerging streets within minutes and throwing traffic into chaos. Firefighters rushed to rescue a trapped driver, while other vehicles were abandoned as roads turned into raging torrents.

In a harrowing twist, a fire truck dispatched for a rescue operation skidded off a service road near the Mournies interchange and landed in a ditch. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

With the storm still raging, authorities are urging residents to stay on high alert, avoid flooded areas, and brace for potential worsening conditions.
