The Forgotten Sunken City of Epidaurus: Greece’s Hidden "Atlantis"

April 13, 2025

Greece, with its centuries-old history and vibrant cultural legacy, offers travelers an endless array of wonders to explore. But beyond the world-famous landmarks and postcard-perfect islands, lie hidden corners of the country—secrets quietly resting beneath the sea, waiting to be discovered.

One such secret is the ancient sunken city of Epidaurus, a breathtaking underwater site just a couple of hours from Athens, yet largely unknown to many visitors.

A Submerged Treasure Beneath the Surface

While much has been said about the submerged city of Pavlopetri in Laconia, few people are aware of a second “Atlantis”—this time lying just off the coast of Epidaurus, not far from the city’s legendary ancient theater, famous for its flawless acoustics.

Located only two meters below the sea’s surface, this sunken city offers an extraordinary experience. Visible just beneath the crystal-clear waters, you can spot the remains of walls, building foundations, giant amphorae, and stone-paved streets, all submerged a mere 1.5 to 2 meters deep, only a few steps from the shore.

From above or while swimming, visitors can clearly trace the outline of ancient walkways—once bustling with life centuries ago. It’s a surreal feeling, almost like diving into a forgotten chapter of history. As you float over these ruins, the sensation is more akin to being an underwater archaeologist than a tourist.

A Glimpse into the Past

Experts believe this site may have once served as a commercial hub in antiquity, playing an important role in the region’s maritime trade network. Though still under research, the layout and size of the ruins speak to a once-thriving settlement now lost to the sea.

To truly appreciate the site’s grandeur, check out the stunning drone footage captured by the YouTube channel Haanity. The video beautifully showcases what many now refer to as the "Atlantis of Argolida", offering an aerial view that reveals the extent of the ruins hidden just beneath the waves.

A Different Kind of Destination

For travelers eager to explore beyond the ordinary, the sunken city of Epidaurus offers a rare chance to connect with history in a uniquely immersive way. Whether you're snorkeling above ancient ruins or simply gazing from the shoreline, it's a place where time feels suspended—and where the past is quite literally beneath your feet.

Next time you’re visiting Epidaurus, don’t stop at the theater. Ask the locals for directions to this hidden gem, grab a mask and snorkel, and step into a world where mythology and history merge under the sea.
