Simplicity is Beauty, Not Excess
Focused on environmental respect, the owners of a complex of rental homes in southeastern Crete have revived an abandoned settlement, transforming it into one of the top tourist destinations.
The Story of Aspros Potamos
Aspros Potamos was the oldest settlement in the area of Pefki, located in southeastern Crete, about one kilometer north of the sea and the town of Makry Gialos. The area is famous for its numerous pristine beaches, traditional and picturesque villages, four ravines, and natural beauty. It blends mountains and sea, with abundant greenery—pine trees, olive trees, and sour fruit trees—creating a lush landscape.
It is said that, in ancient times, Aspros Potamos was a much larger settlement. However, the local residents were forced to abandon it due to frequent raids and destruction from the sea. They moved to higher, more secluded, and safer areas, using the settlement as a retreat. In the winter months, they would bring their animals down or stay in the settlement temporarily to care for the surrounding gardens.
Restoration of a Historic Village
Several years ago, the owners of the complex restored the abandoned, 300-year-old settlement, which consisted of houses made of stone and earth, while maintaining its original character. The settlement now consists of 10 houses, each capable of accommodating 2 to 5 people, built on different levels, creating a picturesque scene that feels like it comes from another era.
As seen in the photos, the houses are built one on top of another, and in many cases, the roof of one serves as the terrace for the house above it. The decoration is simple and unpretentious, featuring traditional pieces such as old chests, woven textiles, and vintage furniture.
A Step Back in Time
Stone-built beds, windowsills, rocks integrated into the walls, ceilings with beams, and reed and earth insulation complete the rustic atmosphere. A cobblestone path connects the homes, and the thick stone walls keep the houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
It is worth noting that, aside from the reception area, there is no electricity in any of the homes. The primary lighting comes from kerosene lamps and candles, and there are no electrical outlets. The thick, stone walls resolve the heating and cooling issues, maintaining an ideal temperature in both winter and summer due to their insulation properties.
A Beautiful and Protected Area
The area where the settlement is located is incredibly scenic, with green mountains, ravines, and hills covered in trees. To the south, the valley extends to Analypsi, and the Aspros Potamos river runs through it, which is where the settlement gets its name.
It is important to note that the settlement of Aspros Potamos has been designated a traditional, protected site, and its authenticity is safeguarded by the Greek government.
