Another Greek Island Declares State of Emergency – Is Your Favorite Holiday Spot at Risk?

Ios has been placed under a state of emergency due to seismic activity in the Cyclades, following similar declarations for Santorini, Amorgos, and Anafi.

Although seismic activity between Santorini and Amorgos has recently decreased, scientists remain vigilant. On Sunday, February 16, two committees—the Permanent Scientific Committee for the Assessment of Seismic Risk and Mitigation of Seismic Hazard and the Permanent Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Hellenic Volcanic Arc of OASP—will meet to evaluate the seismic situation around Anydros.

In Amorgos, landslides have occurred, leading local authorities to install warning signs for drivers. The Hellenic Authority for Geological and Mining Research is set to assess risk levels in affected areas on Monday.

According to ERT, the governor of Naxos is scheduled to visit on Saturday to evaluate the situation in collaboration with the Municipality of Amorgos. Meanwhile, discussions are underway about potentially extending school closures for another week.

The Municipality of Amorgos is also considering measures related to the grading of students taking national exams.

Regarding Thira, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection announced a state of emergency to address the urgent needs and consequences of the recent seismic activity. This emergency status is effective from February 1 to March 1.
