American Traveler Visits One of Greece’s Most Beautiful Islands for Just 1£

March 28, 2025

An American traveler has revealed how she managed to book a trip to Greece and the island of Agistri for just £1 (€1.19).

Hayley Rubery, a content creator from Norfolk, was browsing flights one evening when she came across an unbelievable deal from British Airways—a flight to Athens for just £1. From there, she could easily travel to the stunning island of Agistri.

The 34-year-old seized the opportunity and booked the flight, which was set to depart just five hours later. Besides packing in record time, she also had to find accommodation and organize all the essentials for her last-minute getaway.

Despite the challenge, Hayley said her spontaneous trip was absolutely worth it.
"I booked the flight at 8 PM the night before and woke up at 2 AM for my journey," she shared. "Since this wasn’t a planned trip and I hadn’t saved for a vacation, it was crucial for me to keep everything on a very tight budget."

She was able to snag such a cheap flight by using Avios points from previous travels with British Airways.

To keep costs low, Hayley took a £5 bus from the airport to the port, then boarded a £13 ferry from Athens to Agistri.

Once on the island, she checked into a B&B for her week-long solo trip, which cost £420, and found that £300 was more than enough for her expenses on the island.

"The fact that Agistri is still relatively undiscovered by tourists means it remains incredibly affordable, which was a huge bonus," she explained.

"I decided not to rent a car and just used the local bus to reach the beaches, which cost only €2-3 per ride. The island is so small that I could walk to most places."

"Everything was surprisingly cheap—a coffee was just €2, and dinner cost around €10," she added.

In total, Hayley spent around £800 for the entire week in July 2024—and she insists the experience was worth every penny.

"It was magical," she said.

"With only about 1,000 permanent residents—and around 4,000 visitors during the summer months—it truly felt like an undiscovered paradise."
