Greek Beaches Dominate Europe's Top 5 – Three Ionian Gems Among the Best

May 3, 2025

Greece has made a powerful impression on this year’s list of Europe’s best beaches, claiming three of the top five spots. In total, six Greek beaches were featured among the 50 finest coastal destinations across the continent.

Two stunning Greek beaches—Fteri in Kefalonia and Voutoumi on Antipaxos—took second and third place respectively, standing out in a lineup overflowing with natural beauty, rugged landscapes, and crystal-clear waters. These Ionian treasures held their own against some of the world’s most breathtaking seaside locations.

According to Time Out, the rankings were based on a variety of criteria, including unspoiled natural beauty, the sounds of the surrounding environment, unique geological features, level of preservation, frequency of ideal weather, available facilities, accessibility, and the overall serenity of the waters.

Mediterranean Dominance

Unsurprisingly, Mediterranean destinations were front and center on the list, with nine beaches from Italy, six from Spain, six from Greece, and three from Portugal securing spots in the top 50.

Cala Goloritzè in Sardinia clinched the top position—not just in Europe, but globally. A UNESCO-protected site since 1995, this beach is known for its mesmerizing turquoise waters and dramatic limestone cliffs. Access requires a €7 entrance fee, but the scenery is well worth the cost.

Greece in the Spotlight

In addition to Fteri and Voutoumi, Porto Katsiki in Lefkada ranked fifth overall, rounding out a Greek-dominated top five. The Playa de Rodas in Spain placed fourth.

But Mediterranean locales weren’t the only ones earning recognition. Further north, Iceland’s otherworldly Diamond Beach and Norway’s tranquil Puinn Sand Beach proved that natural beauty transcends geography.

Northern Highlights

From the UK, the list included Three Cliffs Bay in Wales, Porthcurno Beach, and the dramatic Kynance Cove in England. Ireland was represented by the lush Keem Beach in County Mayo.

Greece’s strong presence in the rankings reaffirms what locals and travelers have long known: the country’s beaches are among the most extraordinary in the world, offering a unique blend of dramatic scenery, pristine waters, and authentic, unspoiled charm.
