A €3 Ticket, €10 Meal: The Hidden Island Gem for Carefree, Budget-Friendly Holidays

June 23, 2025

In the heart of the Ionian Sea, just a short hop from mainland Greece, lies a charming, picturesque island that you don’t need a fat wallet to enjoy.

Welcome to Kastos — the smallest inhabited island of the Ionian group, located only six nautical miles from Mytikas in Aetolia-Acarnania, which serves as the main gateway with daily ferry connections.

With a ticket costing just €3, you can step onto this beautiful little island. Ferries run daily (except Thursdays), and there are additional connections from Lefkada every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Tiny yet captivating, Kastos enchants every visitor with its unique charm.

A stone windmill stands proudly on the left side of the harbor — the only one of its kind in the wider Lefkada region — and has become the island’s signature landmark. Every day, it greets passing boats with a gentle turn of its blades, a silent nod to the timeless tranquility here.

The island’s single, quaint harbor village is built in traditional island style and has just what you need — nothing more, nothing less.

There are two cozy café-bars, a small grocery shop, a couple of family-run tavernas, and plenty of peace and quiet, framed by crystal-clear, calm blue waters that invite you to unwind and escape the bustle of everyday life.

By day, small boats circle Kastos, taking visitors to explore hidden coastal treasures like the famous Fokotrypa Cave — a grotto with a tiny sandy beach inside that’s among the island’s must-see spots. But when night falls, a deep, soothing calm settles over Kastos — thanks mainly to the absence of cars.

On Kastos, you can’t bring your vehicle — and the locals wouldn’t have it any other way. Walking is the island’s way of life, and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
