The imposing, steep peaks of Tymfi, in West Zagori, are one of the most popular attractions in the area. The Towers of Astraka or Papingo Towers are an impenetrable stone wall that protects the settlements at its bottom, Mikro and Megalo Papingo.

Nature sculpted this “sculpture” slowly and steadily, starting 200 million years ago, continuing its work until 35 million years ago. The height of these giant stones exceeds two thousand meters, while Astraka (2,432 m.) is among the three highest peaks of Tymfi - the other two are Gamila (2,497 m.) and Gkoura (2,467 m.).

In order to reach the top of Astraka visitors should take the three hours of hiking path from Mikro Papingo to the shelter of Astraka (the only one in the mountainous area of Tymfi) at an altitude of 1,950 meters. The view of the imposing mountain peak that rises above the village of Mikro Papingo like a huge “giant” amazes and awes visitors.
