Greece’s ‘Secret’ Islands: Which One Tops the List?

March 20, 2025

Greece is home to some of the most stunning islands in the world, but beyond the famous hotspots, there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Topping the list of Greece’s most authentic island destinations is Astypalea, according to a new ranking by the international website MSN.com. The popular site encourages its millions of readers to seek out islands that offer more than just sun and sea—places that provide unique travel experiences away from the crowds.

Astypalea: A Blend of Cycladic Charm & Venetian Heritage

MSN.com describes Astypalea as an island with a distinctive atmosphere, blending the whitewashed houses of the Cyclades with the Venetian influence of its medieval castle. The island’s main town (Chora) unfolds a maze of winding alleys, leading up to the imposing fortress that has stood watch over the island for centuries. Meanwhile, its serene beaches offer tranquility, far from the summer rush.

At night, local tavernas showcase the island’s rich flavors, serving up delicacies such as fragrant honey, aged cheeses, and freshly grilled seafood beneath a starlit sky.

Other Hidden Gems & the Importance of Island Connectivity

The MSN.com list, based on research by travel guide Envols, also includes Ithaca, Ikaria, Kastellorizo, Folegandros, and Amorgos. Interestingly, the report highlights Astypalea’s unique location between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, emphasizing the potential for new island-hopping routes that could enhance travel opportunities across the Aegean.

According to Astypalea’s mayor, Nikos Komineas, expanding ferry connections between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese is a key priority. This initiative could unlock new travel experiences, allowing visitors to combine destinations that have historically been difficult to access in a single trip.

"Each year, more and more travel agencies and tourists are looking for flexible options to explore a wider range of islands," Komineas notes. To address this demand, he has been actively working on initiatives to strengthen ferry connections between these island groups—potentially reshaping Aegean tourism in the years to come.

Whether you’re looking for a secluded retreat, rich history, or a unique cultural blend, Astypalea and Greece’s other “secret” islands promise an authentic and unforgettable escape.
