4 Getaways in Northern Greece Perfect for This Time of Year

April 5, 2025

It’s time to pack your bags and head north—Greece’s northern regions are calling, with four unique destinations that each offer their own charm and character.

Kastoria: A Lakeside Gem

Tucked into the western edge of a small peninsula that stretches like a tongue into a shimmering lake, the city of Kastoria feels like a storybook setting. It’s easy to lose your sense of direction here—and you might find yourself wandering back to the same scenic corners without quite knowing how. But that’s part of the magic. Take it in, snap a few photos, and then dive into the city’s rich history and captivating charm.

Kastoria has a long and storied past, beautifully reflected in its many Byzantine monuments and grand mansions, which tell tales of a city that flourished economically during the 17th and 18th centuries. Many of these stately homes are either well-preserved or currently under restoration, offering a glimpse into the architectural elegance of a bygone era.

Some of the most notable mansions include the Tsiatsiapas House (1754), the Emmanuel Brothers’ residence, the Skoutaris, Natzis, and Basharas homes—each one showcasing distinctive design and craftsmanship.

Kastoria is also home to more than 70 Byzantine churches, many of which have been declared protected monuments under Presidential Decrees or Ministerial Decisions. These structures not only preserve the spiritual and artistic legacy of the city through the Byzantine and Ottoman periods but also highlight its deep religious and cultural heritage.

Read more to discover what makes each of these northern gems worth the visit.
