Where Is Europe’s Southernmost Glacier? You Might Be Surprised

April 6, 2025

If someone asked you to guess where the southernmost glacier in Europe is located, what would your first thought be? Switzerland? Italy? Few would immediately think of Greece—but that’s exactly the correct answer.

Contrary to popular belief that glaciers are found only in northern or alpine regions, Europe’s southernmost glacier lies within Greece, not on the famous Mount Olympus, but on Mount Parnassus.

Tucked away in a remote spot known as Eptastomos, at an elevation of 1,260 meters (4,134 feet), lies a remarkable ice cave that houses this glacier. This hidden geological wonder maintains a consistent internal temperature between 0°C and -2°C year-round, allowing snow and ice to accumulate without ever fully melting. It’s this natural refrigeration that has enabled the glacier to survive in such an unexpected location for centuries.

Accessing this ice-filled abyss, however, is no easy feat. Especially in winter, the descent into the cave becomes extremely challenging and even dangerous. Only experienced speleologists (cave explorers) with proper training and equipment can safely navigate the vertical drop and explore the mesmerizing frozen columns formed by melting ice in spring. These icy formations create a breathtaking spectacle—one that offers an unforgettable encounter with nature's artistry.

As explorers venture deeper into the cave, they’re met with an even more awe-inspiring experience. From the depths of the glacier, a low, echoing whisper rises—like the Earth itself is breathing. This haunting sound is produced by air flowing from the surface through the cave’s openings, creating a magical and almost otherworldly atmosphere.

There are two main routes to reach the glacier. One begins in Eptalofos (also known as Agoriani), via a path starting at the 7th kilometer of the road to Arachova. The other starts from Arachova, where signs for Eptastomos and Kalania appear at the 17th kilometer.

More than just a stunning natural curiosity, the Parnassus glacier is a true geological gem—one that many remain unaware of. Yet it holds the impressive distinction of being the southernmost glacier in all of Europe, nestled in the very heart of Greece. A hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.
