The “Blue Lake” Just 1.5 Hours from Thessaloniki: A Hidden Natural Oasis

May 10, 2025

Tucked away in northern Greece, just a short drive from the town of Kilkis and about 1.5 hours from Thessaloniki, lies one of the country’s most enchanting natural gems. Locals call it the Blue Lake of Skra—a small, emerald-hued lake surrounded by dense greenery and bathed in sunlight. Its vibrant color comes from fossilized organisms that lie at the bottom, giving the water its mesmerizing turquoise tint.

This serene haven, formed by the converging streams of Mount Paiko, is a product of nature’s artistry. These streams flow together, cascade down the Skra waterfalls, and plunge into the lake, which reaches a depth of about four meters. The waterfalls themselves are adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, adding to the mystical atmosphere of the site.

“Our area welcomes large numbers of visitors every weekend, and we’re working to provide the necessary infrastructure to accommodate them,”
said Kyros Kalavazis, Deputy Mayor for Culture, Sports, and Youth in the Municipality of Axioupoli, in an interview with ERT3.
“The municipality has even proposed a plan to connect the region’s hiking trails, linking Skra Lake with Lake Metallion,” he added.

Once you've explored the lake and soaked in the scenery, make sure to stop by the Skra Military Museum, which showcases weapons, uniforms, medals, helmets, fragments, and photographs, along with relics from the armies of seven different nations who fought in the region during World War I. Nearby, you’ll find the Monument of the Battle of Skra, commemorating one of the most significant Greek victories of the war.

Discovering Skra Lake

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Paiko, in the village of Skra in the Kilkis region, the lake is a true hidden treasure. Also known as the "Blue Lake of Greece," it’s revered not only for its vivid color but also for the crystal clarity of its waters. It’s a perfect destination for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts who are looking to immerse themselves in an untouched landscape.

The lake was formed from the waters of the Kotza-Dere stream, which feeds the Skra waterfalls—among the area's most captivating natural features. To reach the lake, visitors cross a charming wooden footbridge, surrounded by rich mountain vegetation and accompanied by the calming sound of rushing water—a scene straight out of a fairytale.

A Destination for All Seasons

Whether you're a local seeking a weekend escape or a traveler exploring northern Greece, Skra Lake offers a refreshing retreat into nature. Its blend of natural beauty, historic significance, and easy accessibility makes it one of the best-kept secrets of Central Macedonia—a place where the past and present flow together like the streams that formed it.
