The Process of Making Papyrus and Early Greek Writing Materials

July 9, 2026

While the Greeks used animal skins (parchment) and broken pottery shards (ostraka) for short notes, the undisputed king of long-form literary and administrative storage was papyrus (papyros), imported at great expense from Pharaonic and Ptolemaic Egypt.

  • Slicing the Pith: The production process was highly specialized. Workers harvested the tall stalks of the Cyperus papyrus sedge plant growing along the Nile. The tough green outer rind was stripped away, exposing the soft, fibrous inner white pith. This pith was carefully sliced longitudinally into thin, flat ribbons.

  • The Grid Gridiron Layout: To form a single sheet (kollema), these papyrus strips were laid down side-by-side on a wet wooden board to form a tight vertical layer. A second layer of strips was then laid directly on top, running horizontally at a perfect 90-degree angle to the first layer, creating a durable cross-hatched grid pattern.

  • Pressing and Rolling: The dual-layered sheet was beaten repeatedly with a heavy wooden mallet and placed under a heavy stone press. The natural sticky sap squeezed out of the plant pith acted as a permanent glue, welding the layers together. Once dried in the sun, the rough surface was polished smooth using a piece of ivory or a smooth shell. Multiple sheets were glued end-to-end to form long writing scrolls (charta).
