In recent years, rapid building expansion—including new structures, extensions, and pools—has significantly altered the landscape. Some areas now have five times more built-up space per resident than the Greek island average.
Overdevelopment and Loopholes
To curb this overdevelopment, the Greek government suspended new building permits until the end of 2025. However, loopholes still allow construction to continue, particularly for applications submitted before the ban. Unregulated excavation and the proliferation of pools add to the strain on the terrain, increasing the risk of landslides and structural collapses.
