The Cycladic Village with the Cleanest Air

March 20, 2025

The Swiss company IQAir recently released data on air quality across various regions of Greece, highlighting both the most polluted and the cleanest areas. The study focused on the concentration of PM2.5 particles, which are among the most dangerous air pollutants. These fine particles originate primarily from fossil fuel combustion, wildfires, and dust clouds.

PM2.5 particles are so small that they can bypass the body's natural defenses, reaching the lungs and even entering the bloodstream. Exposure to these pollutants has been linked to respiratory issues, inflammation, and chronic kidney disease.

Below, you'll find the top 10 most polluted regions in Greece, as well as the 10 areas with the cleanest air—one of which is a picturesque village in the Cyclades: Dyo Choria on the island of Tinos.

The 10 Most Polluted Areas in Greece (According to IQAir)

  • Ioannina (Epirus)

  • Plagiari (Municipality of Thermaikos)

  • Ellispontos (Kozani Prefecture)

  • Aliartos (Boeotia Prefecture)

  • Elefsina (Attica)
