It May Be Altered by a "Monster": The Greek Island Dominating International Lists Won’t Be Authentic and Unexplored for Long

A luxury hotel-village was planned to be built on the island, creating a third settlement. This development would not only showcase traditional elements to tourists but also keep visitors confined, leaving them with no incentive to explore the island. Luckily, this project has not progressed, and the hope remains that the island stays unspoiled.

Astypalaia, an island that seems to float between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, has once again made its mark internationally, topping the new MSN.com list of Greece’s most authentic and unexplored islands.

With its unique geographical location, which combines elements of both island cultures, this “butterfly of the Aegean” has managed to maintain its character, offering visitors a rare experience far from mass tourism development.

The main town on the island, with the iconic Querini Castle at the top, preserves the authenticity of a medieval settlement that seems to have stopped time. The whitewashed alleys, wind-battered wooden balconies, and serene squares give the feeling of an island that does not try to impress but allows its beauty to unfold naturally.

Its beaches, from the exotic Vatses to the secluded Plakes, offer rare moments of tranquility, while visitors who arrive here enjoy local cuisine, including the famous Astypalian olive cheese, fresh fish, and the aromatic island honey.

The MSN.com list, based on research by travel guide Envols, also includes Ithaca, Ikaria, Kastellorizo, Folegandros, and Amorgos. However, Astypalaia stands out for its potential in sustainable tourism.

With its pioneering shift toward a “green island” model, relying on renewable energy sources and sustainable transportation, the island is redefining the concept of travel in the Aegean. Meanwhile, the prospect of enhancing ferry connections between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese could create a new chapter in island hopping, allowing travelers to discover the magic of the Aegean in a more flexible and exciting way.

Discovering the Island: Where to Go and What to Try

Astypalaia is not just a destination that enchants with its beauty; it is also an island offering authentic experiences, both through its paths and its flavors. From the picturesque alleys of the main town to the secluded beaches and delicious local dishes, every moment on the island is an opportunity for exploration and enjoyment.

Start your tour in Chora, one of the most beautiful island settlements in the Aegean, with white houses climbing up the hill and the iconic Querini Castle dominating the top. The winding alleys lead to the Monastery of Panagia Portaitissa, one of the island’s most important religious monuments, offering a mesmerizing sea view. For those who love the sea, the beaches of Livadi, Vatses, and Plakes offer calm waters and golden sandy shores, while a trip to the small islands of Koutsomytis and Kounoupa reveals the exotic side of Astypalaia.

The journey is not complete without a gastronomic experience at the island's traditional taverns. Lambriano, a goat stuffed with rice and herbs, is a must-try specialty. Sweet lovers will adore the pougia, crispy pies filled with mizithra cheese and honey, as well as the chlori cheese pie made with local cheese. The fluffy, puffy cheese pies are perfect for breakfast, while the island’s honey stands out for its aromatic profile and taste.
