Italian peacekeepers restored the Cross in Debel

April 23, 2026

Italian peacekeepers restored the Cross in Debel after it was destroyed in an earlier incident involving Israeli soldiers.

It was a powerful act of restoration, as the symbol of faith was raised once again in a region marked by tension.

The incident took place in the village of Debel, one of the few predominantly Christian (mainly Maronite Catholic) villages in southern Lebanon, near the border with Israel. During military operations by the Israel Defense Forces in the area, a soldier used a sledgehammer to destroy a cross bearing a statue of Jesus that stood in a family’s private garden. Images of the act spread widely on social media, sparking strong reactions from Christian communities and Israeli authorities alike.

The Israeli side quickly expressed regret, condemning the act as “unacceptable” and a “moral failure.” Two soldiers were removed from duty and given 30 days of detention. The IDF stated it had worked with the local community to replace the cross, even presenting images of a smaller, more decorative version featuring icons of saints.

However, according to reports from the area and circulating video footage, the actual restoration was carried out by the Italian contingent of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, operating in the western sector of southern Lebanon. The Italian peacekeepers delivered and installed a new cross, similar to the original, in less than 48 hours, in cooperation with the local Christian community and the village priest. Many described the move as a swift and respectful response to the religious identity of the residents.

Debel remains one of the areas heavily affected by clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, with much of southern Lebanon experiencing heightened tensions following military operations launched in March 2026. In this context, the restoration of a religious symbol carries particular weight, highlighting the importance of respecting sacred sites and religious freedoms—even, and especially, in conflict zones.

For the local Christian community, a minority in Lebanon that has faced increasing pressure in recent years, the reinstallation of the Cross stands as a message of resilience and hope. Residents and clergy emphasize that the cross was not merely decorative, but a living symbol of faith in a neighborhood that has endured repeated destruction.

The actions of the Italian peacekeepers, serving under the umbrella of the United Nations, also underscore the role of international forces in protecting cultural and religious heritage in sensitive regions. Despite differing narratives over who placed the new cross, the outcome remains the same: the symbol of Christian faith now stands once again in Debel, sending a message that faith and respect can endure—even in the midst of conflict.
