Pyrgi: The colorful medieval village that looks like a labyrinth

January 1, 2017

Greek villages are like small ornaments scattered in the mountains or on islands in the sea.

They have a centuries-old history and will take your heart away on your very first visit.

It stands out not only for its architecture but also for its general esthetics.

One thing you will notice from the first moment is the artistic decorative patterns on the facades of the houses.

Pyrgi is the largest medieval village of Chios, and the combination of this medieval architecture and painting makes it so special and famous. The design of the houses fascinates the visitor at first sight. This technique of exterior decoration was loved by the locals, and that is why they have kept it alive until today.

Despite the fact that the village has undergone many changes and transformations over time, Pyrgi is still a living medieval legend. A legend that has another special feature, and that is that it looks like a labyrinth!

One of the historical monuments that can be seen there is the church of Holy Apostles. It is an excellently preserved Byzantine monument, whose construction dates back to the 13th to 14th centuries.
