The Lion Monument of Nafplio which was carved in 19th century

July 21, 2017

Between Allerheiligen Church and the city cemetery is a sculptural monument of exceptional art known as Bavarian Lion. It dates from 1840 and was built by the first professor of sculpture at Technical University of Athens, German Christian Ziegel.

His model for this work was the Lucerne Lion of the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Under the Lion of Bavaria, a German inscription is engraved in the rock, stating that the Lion was ordered by the King of Bavaria Ludwig, who was also the father of the first King of the Greeks, Otto.

It is dedicated to the memory of the Bavarian soldiers in Otto Procession who died in 1833 in Nafplio as a result of a typhoon.
