Algerian Male Boxer Wins First Match in Women's Boxing at Paris Olympics

August 1, 2024

Algerian Boxer in Gender Controversy Wins Olympic Bout in 46 Seconds, Opponent Left in Tears

In a controversial Olympic boxing match, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who has faced scrutiny over her gender eligibility, won decisively against Italy's Angela Carini in the 66-kilogram women's division at the Paris Olympics on Thursday. The bout ended after just 46 seconds when Carini, overwhelmed by Khelif's power, abandoned the match and left the ring in tears.

Carini's Reaction and Coach's Comments

Angela Carini, visibly emotional, questioned the fairness of the fight, expressing her frustration to her coaches. She later explained her decision to abandon the match, stating, "I got into the ring to fight. I didn't give up, but one punch hurt too much and so I said enough. I'm going out with my head held high."

Carini's coach, Emanuele Renzini, clarified that quitting was not premeditated. "It would have been easier not to show up, because all of Italy had been asking her not to fight for days," he said. "But Angela was motivated and wanted to do it. She quit after taking one punch; she told me she didn't feel she could fight."

Gender Eligibility Controversy

Imane Khelif has been at the center of a gender eligibility debate since failing a test in 2023. She was previously disqualified from the World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) for not meeting gender eligibility standards, testing positive for high testosterone levels and having XY chromosomes.

Despite these findings, Khelif and the Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) denied the claims. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared Khelif to compete in the Paris Olympics. "Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules," stated IOC spokesperson Mark Adams. "They are women in their passports and it’s stated that this is the case, that they are female."

The COA condemned the accusations against Khelif as "baseless propaganda," asserting that such attacks were unfair and targeted.

Clarification on Khelif's Gender Identity

Contrary to some reports, Rosario Coco, president of Gaynet Communications in Italy, clarified that Khelif is intersex, not transgender. "She is an intersex person, who has always socialized as a woman and has a sporting history in women's competitions," Coco stated.
