Santorini: Shocking Scenes at Red Beach as Massive Rockfalls Occur – Chinese Tourists Take Selfies on the Edge of a Cliff

February 4, 2025

Closed to the Public for the First Time

For the first time, access to Red Beach in Santorini has been prohibited after today’s earthquakes caused large rockfalls. Just moments before the landslide, a group of Chinese tourists was at the site, taking photos.

Rockfall and Visible Changes

Footage aired on Mega TV’s "Live News" shows the distinct color difference in the rock formations, revealing the white area where the landslide occurred. Red Beach, one of Santorini’s most famous beaches, is located near an archaeological site and is now only accessible by boat.

Additionally, the sea level has dropped, making another white section of rock visible—an area that was previously submerged underwater.

Tourists at Risk Moments Before the Collapse

According to the report, earlier today a group of about 15 Chinese tourists arrived at the site. They sat at the edge of the cliff—the very area where rocks later broke away—and took photos.

A local resident and boat captain noted that just two days ago, the area was fully accessible.

Locals Remain Calm Amid Departures

"For us locals, things remain calm. The ones leaving are mostly seasonal workers and people with young children," a resident said.

"As a member of the National Guard, I can say there is a plan in place, and we are prepared to assist whenever needed. We are staying composed for everyone’s safety and helping those who are struggling with the situation," he added.
