Acropolis Museum: 33rd Most Visited Museum Worldwide in 2024 – Which Museum Took the Top Spot

April 3, 2025

According to The Art Newspaper, the Acropolis Museum ranked 33rd on the list of the most visited museums worldwide for 2024.

With 2,000,312 visits, the Acropolis Museum holds the 33rd position on the global list of museums with the highest visitor numbers, as reported by The Art Newspaper. This data refers to the previous year, and while the Greek museum dropped three spots compared to the 2023 list, it still saw a 5% increase compared to that year and a 14% increase compared to 2019. This is largely due to the impressive visitor numbers at newly opened museums last year.

For 2024, the Louvre Museum in Paris remains the most visited museum worldwide, with 8.7 million visitors. It is followed by the Vatican Museums (6.8 million), the British Museum (6.47 million), the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (5.72 million), and London’s Tate Modern (4.6 million). In fact, the British Museum saw an 11% increase in visits compared to 2023 and a 4% increase compared to 2019.

The museum that saw the largest increase in visitor numbers last year was the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, with a remarkable 68% rise. On the other hand, the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Belo Horizonte experienced the largest decline, with a 29% drop in visits.
