The glorious history of Nafpaktos is associated with Miguel de Cervantes. The statue of the “father of Don Quixote”, which is located on the right side of the port, makes us wonder what is the association between the great Spanish novelist and poet and the beautiful city of Etoloakarnania.

And yet, Miguel de Cervantes had taken part in the Battle of Nafpaktos. On October 7, 1571, he boarded the Italian frigate named “Marchesa”, despite the fact that he was seriously ill.

He was suffering from malaria and his doctors had recommended that he stayed in bed, but his heroism did not allow him to stay locked in the barn. He was, thus, bravely thrown into battle, but his left arm was severely injured.

From then on he was left paralyzed for the rest of his life.

The Spanish writer is a part of the glorious history of Nafpaktos, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Greece. It also uniquely combines both the mountain and the sea.

Certainly, the most impressive feature of the city of Nafpaktos is its fortification, which starts from the port and after three consecutive walls ends at its castle. Nafpaktos, which has been characterized as a traditional settlement, welcomes its visitors with its atmospheric port and the imposing castle, and its cobbled streets and traditional houses.
