The river Kosinthos divides the city of Xanthi into two parts: in the west, which includes the old and the new city, and in the east, the so-called settlement "Samakov", which is less populated and is characterized by its beautiful natural environment. Both parts have still preserved their traditional aroma and enchant the visitor with their nobility and grandeur.

The narrow streets of the old town are decorated with well-preserved mansions with characteristic architecture, as they represent an amazing mixture of different styles: Greek neoclassicism, local architecture and Ottoman style. Add to this the splendid churches and picturesque squares and the old town is definitely a living open-air museum, which still retains its old glory, but has the atmosphere of another era.

A trademark of Nea Poli(new city), on the other hand, is the square with the clock structure and the tobacco warehouses. A visit to City Bazaar in Zoagora Square is definitely a unique experience.

Discover the rich historical and cultural tradition of the area, which flourished especially in the 19th century through the production and processing of tobacco, by visiting the Folklore Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the gallery and the famous archeological site of Abdera. The town is also famous for its rich cultural life and the variety of festivals that are organized throughout the year! The Carnival of Xanthi, the perfect combination of tradition, local customs and modern culture, the Old Town Festival in September - when the alleys of the Old Town turn into a colorful festive setting - and the summer river festival in the streets of Nestos are some of the events not to be missed.

Nature lovers will easily discover that the area of Xanthi is an earthly paradise! The forest of Drymos (Haidou), Lake Vistonida, the waterfall of Livaditis, the forest village of Erymanthos and of course the river Nestos are landscapes of incomparable natural beauties and important ecosystems with rich flora and fauna. The Rodopi mountain range is famous for its primeval forests, but also for its traditional mountain villages, including "Pomakochoria", famous for their cultural and architectural uniqueness.

Adventurers can experience adrenaline filled activities: Canoeing, hiking, cycling, bird watching, archery, jeep driving and horse riding are just some of the activities available in the Nestos, Vistonida or Livaditis.

So if you are a lover of tradition, nature, good food and entertainment, Xanthi is the destination that will satisfy even the most demanding traveler.
