A global report from the Swiss platform InterNations, based on a survey of expatriates, reveals the 53 cheapest and most expensive countries to live in. The survey participants evaluated their satisfaction with their financial situation and whether their household income is sufficient for a comfortable life. At the top of the list of affordable countries is an Asian nation, while a North American country leads the list of the most expensive.
Vietnam: The Cheapest Country for the Third Consecutive Year
Vietnam has once again been ranked as the most affordable country to live in. According to an American expat living there, "The people are friendly, and the cost of living is incredibly low."
Satisfaction with the cost of living: 86% of expats are satisfied with the prices in the country.
Adequate income: 68% report that their household income fully covers their needs for a comfortable life.
Overall economic satisfaction: 65% are happy with their financial situation. Despite the low cost of living, some, less than 20%, earn annual incomes of up to $150,000.
Colombia and Indonesia follow in second and third place, respectively.
Canada: The Most Expensive Country to Live In
On the other hand, Canada emerges as the most expensive country in the ranking.
High cost of living: A Spanish permanent resident mentions, "The cost of living is outrageously high, and going out for food or drinks is considered a luxury."
Income insufficiency: 53% report that their available income is not enough to live comfortably.
General dissatisfaction: 66% describe Canada as expensive, while 26% consider their financial situation to be "very poor."
Greece’s Position
Greece sits approximately in the middle of the rankings, at 24th place.
Finland and the United Kingdom take the second and third spots among the most expensive countries, respectively.
