Herbal medicine was the primary line of defense against disease, infection, and physical trauma, practiced by specialized root-cutters (rhizotomoi) and drug-sellers (pharmakopolai) who mastered the chemical and biological properties of Mediterranean plants.
The systematic framework of Greek herbalism was deeply tied to the foundational theory of the four bodily humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Health was viewed as a state of perfect equilibrium among these fluids, while disease was caused by a specific humor becoming too hot, cold, wet, or dry. Herbs were classified by these identical properties and deployed to restore balance.
For example, willow bark (Itea), which contains salicin (the natural precursor to modern aspirin), was classified as cooling and dry; it was routinely steeped into bitter teas to reduce raging inflammatory fevers and alleviate joint pain. Wild chamomile (Chamaimelon) was widely harvested and brewed into soothing poultices to treat open wounds, stomach cramps, and ocular infections, acting as a highly effective, natural antimicrobial agent.
For more severe, life-threatening conditions, Greek physicians utilized highly potent, toxic botanicals that required precise mathematical dosing. Black hellebore (Helleboros) was famously deployed as a radical purgative to evacuate excess black bile from patients suffering from severe mental depression or epilepsy, requiring careful processing to prevent fatal poisoning. Opium poppies (Mekon) were systematically slit to harvest the raw, milky latex, which was dried into cakes to serve as the ancient world's most powerful anesthetic and pain reliever during invasive surgical procedures or bone-settings. This deep empirical knowledge of plant biology was eventually synthesized by Dioscorides in his monumental work De Materia Medica, creating a botanical medical baseline that dominated global scientific thought for over 1,500 years.
