Stefaniada: The "youngest" lake in Greece with such a beauty like an artist’s canvas, was created by a landslide

November 19, 2020

Most people, even Greeks themselves, don’t even know its existence but Stefaniada lake, created by a landslide, is the youngest lake of Greece and has formed a landscape with such a beauty like an artist’s canvas.

This beautiful lake was created at Karditsa in 1963 after a landslide that happened at 850 meters which resulted in the detachment of the slope Echoio from mountain Sminiko.

Then this slope fell into the Stefaniotis river, one of the most powerful tributaries of the Acheloos river, creating changes in the geology of the area but fortunately no damage to nearby settlements.

As the slope fell, a basin opened up on the ground which slowly filled with water, creating a small natural lake in the area. This is the wonderful natural (and not artificial) lake Stefaniada, with an area of only 175 acres.

You can easily approach the lake and the route up there is excellent, as lake Stefaniada is about 70 km from the city of Karditsa, passing through beautiful villages and below the mountains of Agrithea.

If you are lucky enough and the weather is nice, you will be amazed by its waters, shining like a mirror and reminding how a natural miracle looks like.
