Discovering The Little Village Built in The Mountains by Alexander the Great

November 23, 2020

The village is called Agriani and it is built on the slopes of Mount Parnon at 986 meters and is one of the most mountainous villages in the prefecture of Laconia.

It was built in 327 B.C. by Alexander the Great and was renamed Agriani, a word that comes from the ancient Thracian tribe of Agrians which was famous for the military technique and bravery of its men.

Agriani was built by Alexander in the service of his vision to expand his empire but was never completed since he died in 323 B.C.

This settlement may remind you of some movie scene because walking in its small cobbled alleys and stone houses may travel your mind back in time.

The village belongs to the municipality of Sparta and its population does not exceed 200 inhabitants!
