The story of Glaucus and Scylla is a tragic tale of unrequited love, divine jealousy, and the physical manifestation of a broken heart. It explains how a beautiful sea nymph was transformed into one of the most feared monsters in Greek mythology.
1. The Transformation of Glaucus
Glaucus began his life as a humble mortal fisherman. His life changed forever when he noticed that the fish he caught would spring back to life and hop back into the ocean after touching a particular type of grass on the shore.
Curious, Glaucus ate the grass himself. He was immediately seized by a transformation: his hair turned the color of seaweed, his shoulders broadened, and his legs merged into a powerful fish tail. The sea gods welcomed him, and Oceanus and Tethys purged his mortal remains, turning him into an immortal sea god with the gift of prophecy.
2. Unrequited Love
Despite his new divine status, Glaucus was not traditionally handsome. When he encountered the beautiful nymph Scylla bathing in a secluded cove, he fell instantly in love.
Scylla, however, was terrified by his blue skin and scaly tail. She fled to the safety of a high cliff, refusing to listen to his pleas. Desperate to win her heart, Glaucus traveled to the island of Aeaea to seek the help of the famous sorceress Circe.
3. The Jealousy of Circe
Glaucus asked Circe for a love potion to make Scylla love him. However, the plan backfired: Circe fell in love with Glaucus herself. She tried to convince him to forget the nymph and stay with her instead.
When Glaucus declared that his love for Scylla would last as long as there were leaves on the trees and seaweed in the ocean, Circe’s love turned into a cold, vengeful rage. Since she could not punish the god, she decided to destroy the mortal girl he loved.
4. The Poisoned Pool
Circe prepared a powerful mixture of poisonous herbs and "hellish drugs." She traveled to the cove where Scylla frequently bathed and poured the venom into the water, chanting dark incantations.
When Scylla waded into the water to cool herself, she witnessed a nightmare:
The Transformation: From her waist down, she saw six fierce, barking dog heads erupting from her body.
The Monster: Her legs disappeared, and she became rooted to a rock, transformed into a terrifying creature with twelve feet and six long necks, each ending in a head with triple rows of sharp teeth.
5. The Strait of Messina
Horrified by her own transformation and driven by a newfound hatred for all things that sailed, Scylla took up residence in a sea cave. Across from her lived Charybdis, a monster who created a deadly whirlpool by swallowing the sea three times a day.
This created the "Strait of Scylla and Charybdis." Sailors were forced to choose:
Sail too close to Charybdis and lose the entire ship to the whirlpool.
Sail too close to Scylla and lose six men—one for each of her heads.
